Hiking in Slovenia

The route from Rudno polje to Lipanca makes a virtually ideal family trip – it starts as a gentle walk through the mighty Pokljuka spruce forests, continues with a slight ascent on the margin of the Pokljuka plateau, becomes somewhat more diverse and ends on the fairly steep grass slopes below Lipanca, from where you finally reach the mountain hut Blejska koča. Hardier mountaineers will need about one and a half hours for the trip, but if you take children with you, more time will be necessary, especially if you tackle the route in August, when these forests are full of strawberries and bilberries.

Basic data

An excellently waymarked, pleasantly varied route with short somewhat steeper sections.

The hike starts from Rudno polje, which is better known as the venue for cross-country skiing competitions.

Rudno polje – Lipanca: 1 hour, 30 minutes
Return: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Total: 3 hours

1630 m

Height difference

310 m

You can do this trip anytime, even in the worst summer heat the forest will generally protect you. And in winter many paths on Pokljuka are trodden through the snow.

Recommended equipment

In principle you could reach Lipanca even in sports footwear, but because of the rocky path I would recommend mountain boots.
